(DIY alert) Make your own 'boyfriend' jean shorts #DIY

A few weeks ago my better half was having a closet clear out and I thought I would get my 'creative' on (work what he has and turn it into something new for me YEY).  So with 2 pairs of his jeans, scissors and a few knives (bread knife and a smaller knife) I got to work.

After some cutting, scratching and 'destroying' I have made myself some 'boyfriend' denim shorts.

If you want to do it, it's pretty simple:

1) Try them on and draw a small mark of where you want to cut them (important note - always cut them LONGER than you think as you can always cut more fabric off, you can never put fabric back.  I found that even giving them that little bit extra before cutting them made them JUST the right length (after turning them up).

2) Difficult how to explain this but, take the BOTTOM of the jeans as the mark of how to cut them (as you will find when you lay the jeans on the floor the front/back of the waistband do not always match together (see 2nd pic), so let them 'fall' like this on the floor, making sure the BOTTOMS of the jeans match together and then cut the denim according to that line.

3) I don't bother measuring the exact length I have cut one leg to the other, I just fold them over (see 3rd pic), match up the stitch/thread lines and then cut them.

4) Now for the cool part - cut/rip some holes in the jeans to get that worn / vintage look.  Use the scissors to start cutting the hole and then rip the jeans to get the 'natural' tear / rip look.  To be honest I could have gone crazy on the 'destroying' part, so may 'revisit' these shorts again for some more torn / worn parts.  You can also use a grater or nail file to create more frayed / ripped bits.

I found the easiest way was to put a magazine between the jean legs and then 'saw' with the bread knife until the denim get 'fuzzy' and you see the threads, then you can then rip them a bit more and destroy them which ever way you want.  Just try and see what technique works best for you.

5) Chuck on a belt, wait for warmer weather OR wear with black tights.  Ta da - done!
